Cindy McLEISH (Eildon) (10:18): I want to acknowledge the quiet courage and community spirit shown by two everyday Victorians in Healesville. During a bus journey a local woman, Stephy Keach, was discreetly warned by a fellow passenger and the bus driver that another commuter’s behaviour was cause for concern. When the man went to get off at the same stop, bus driver Trevor Esplin from McKenzie’s bus line went a step further, calling the woman back onto the bus and ensuring she was dropped closer to home. I commend Trevor and the young passenger, whose awareness, compassion and willingness to act represent the very best of our community. Their actions remind us to be aware of our surroundings, trust our instincts and never hesitate to speak up if something does not seem right. Far too many women change the way they travel because they do not always feel safe.
