Ella GEORGE (Lara) (14:38): (1753) My question is for the Minister for Consumer Affairs. How are the government’s rental reforms addressing the challenges that local renters in the Lara electorate face? According to ABS statistics, across the Lara electorate approximately 20 to 22 per cent of homes are rented, but this percentage increases dramatically when you look at specific suburbs such as Corio, at 37 per cent, or across Norlane and North Shore, which is around 49 per cent. I speak to many residents across the community who are renting and who have suffered pressure and increased stress due to concerns about their rentals. These vary from increasing pressure of rising rent to instability, rental shortages and maintenance concerns. What is evident in these discussions is the vulnerability that many residents feel and how grateful they are that the government is making rent fairer and safer for them and their families. Victoria is leading the nation on renters rights, and I look forward to hearing from the minister.
